GAME OVER

Clementine

I am very honored to have a guest artist, Renae, share this little gem of hers.

On the Fifth Age, through a link-page, in a Tree of lofty span
Dwelt a tribe-folk who were nigh-broke, and my daaaarlin', Cath-e-rannnn

Oh my darlin', oh my darlin', oh my daaaarlin', Cath-e-rannnn
I will call you that forever, 'cause I can't pronounce "Katran"

Oh my dad, Gehn, he got mad when I forsook his twisted Plan
Trapped in D'ni, wasn't f'ni, till I met my Cath-e-rannnn

Book of Riven, I was given, where the waters upward ran
Nearly drown-ded, but was found-ed by my darlin' Cath-e-rannnn

She had cousins, by the dozens, but Lord Gehn, that ruthless man,
In a dark mood, made them wahrk food, and p****d off my Cath-e-rannnn

Soon she bore us to a torus that she wrote without a plan
Oh her phrasing was amazing, and I fell for Cath-e-rannnn

Took a close look at the Fifth book, and to edit I began,
Planned to tend it, gently mend it, then run off with Cath-e-rannnn

Gehn was headin' for a weddin', but my brilliant Cath-e-rannnn
She was fakin', saved my bacon, with the help of Grandma Ann

Then we had sons, they were bad sons; though we did the best we can,
One was seedy, one was greedy, and they trapped my Cath-e-rannnn

Now I'm mending, never-ending, stuck back where it all began,
Trapped in D'ni, lost my honey, oh I miss Cath-e-rannnn

Oh my darlin, oh my darlin, oh my daaaarlin', Cath-e-rannnn
I can learn 'most any language, but I can't pronounce "Katran".

(Indigo Girls' Closer to Fine)

I'm tryin' to tell you 'bout the Riven Age
Kinda like a beach resort, but it's a cage
And the best thing Atrus ever did for me
Is to help me steal some books from old D'ni
They're only books, after all. (yeah)

Now the Art has a hunger that's insatiable
And the books use an ink that's hard to make
I wrote as many ages as I'm able
I just wish I knew why none of them were stable
There must be some mistake!

I went to the Book Room, I smoked toasted ytram
I killed off some guildsmen, I made eyes at Katran
There's more than one answer to these questions
Pointing me in a crooked line
And the more I deal with all these stupid villagers
I know that I'm diviiiiiine! Yeah! I gotta be divine!

(Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys)

D'ni aren't easy to love and they're harder to hold
They'd much rather write in their study until they grow mold
Big ugly goggles & dusty ol' Guild Cloaks
and never get out in the sun
If you don't understand him & he don't die young
He's liable to just link away.

Mammas, don't let your babies grow up to be Writers
Don't let 'em write Ages and ride in Maglevs
Let 'em be farmers and florists instead
Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Writers
They're stuck in their books and they never look
Even at someone they love.

(Yankee Doodle)

Atrus junior went to D'ni just to find his Daddy,
Learned the basics of the art
But Dad was just a baddy!
"Guildsman Atrus, fix my Age,
Won't you fix the typos?
Stuff your Daddy in a sack
And feed him to a reekoo.

Rudolf

Rudolf the Red-Nosed Sunner
Had a very shiny nose
He never had a worry
Just sat on the rocks and dozed.
All of the other sunners
Used to call him down to play
Rudolf the couch potato
Just preferred to catch some rays.
...then one sunny Leebro day
Gehn came to say
"Rudoph, with your nose so bright
I've a job for you that's right."
Rudoph was pretty stupid
And followed with a silly bark *snort*
That was the end of Rudoph
Eaten by a giant wahrk.

Gil-Galad (to tune of BBC version of Tolkien)

Gil galad was an 'ickle squee
Of him the bards sang stridently
The last of squees to take a nap
Between the treeroots and the trap
His cheeks were fat, his squeak was loud
His coat the color of a cloud
His shrilling cries forever shook
Between the cliff-face and the brook
But long ago he went away
And where he dwelleth none can say
For out he went upon a hunch
And ended up in Saavy's lunch.

(To the tune of "The Marvellous Toy")

When I was just a wee little lad
Full of health and joy
My father Atrus came one night
And gave to me a toy
A wonder to behold it was
Shaped like a big goldfish
And when I climbed inside the car
It made a noise like this

It went....
WHIIZZ to the north and WHOOSH to the south
and PING when it stood still
I never knew just what it was
And I guess I never will.

(change tune: Little Boxes)

Little passageways in the hillside
Little passageways made of ticky tacky
Little passageways in the underground,
And they all look just the same,
There's a short one, and a long one,
And a straight one, and a curvy one
And they're all made of little passageways
And they all look just the same...

(change tune again: Waltzing Matilda)

Once a jolly swagman
Fell into a linking book
Under the shade of a fractal tree
And he cursed as he tried to
Get the tower's clock to work
"What kind of madman has done this to me?"
Eight marker switches
Quicktime with glitches
You'll get a ride if you go up the tree
And he cursed as he tried to
Get the combination right
"What kind of madman has done this to me?"

(Change tune: My Bonnie)

My Mommy lies over in Riven,
My Daddy is stuck in D'ni,
My brother is mostly a psycho,
Oh bring back a red page to me!
Bring back, oh bring back, oh bring back a red page to me!
Bring back, or bring back, oh bring back a red page to me!

WE INTERRUPT THIS MUSIC BROADCAST FOR A BRIEF NEWS FLASH--

Gehn constructs a Great Glass Elevator and escapes to a new world, where he promptly lures and enslaves a colony of small natives called Oompah Loompahs. However, in a show of remorse, instead of setting them to work making books the kinder, gentler Gehn puts them to work making candy for children. The rumors of using poor children as guinea pigs, stretching, flattening, beating others into new shapes and sizes, or flushing them up giant drainpipes is presently being disputed by the Chocolate Factory's lawyers. "I am here to stay," Gehn was quoted as saying. "Nothing shall dislodge me from this Age short of an invasion of Vermicious Knids."

WE NOW RETURN YOU TO EASY LISTENING

(Blue Moon)

Bluuuuue Page,
I sat upon my throne
With a dream in my heart
To rule an Age of my own.
Bluuuuue Paaaage
You knew just what I was there for
Having vengeance prepared for
Now it's the booty I care for.
And then suddenly appeared before me
The only Age I hadn't yet possessed
Achenar whispered, "Don't you dare go before me,"
I linked and found myself stuck in a mess!
Blue Paaaage,
Now I'm stuck all alone
Waiting for some chump
To link and bring me home.
(wa wa wa waaaa)

(Greensleeves)

Alas, my son, you do me wrong,
To cast me off so discourteously,
For I have trained you for so long
To be my glorified secretary..

---

(Yesterday)

Riven seemed a lovely place to stay
Now half the temple island's blown away
Oh I believe in yesterday...
Yesterday
Atrus took the keys and ran away
Gave me an extended holiday
Oh I believe in yesterday...
Why he had to go I don't know
He didn't say
I did something wrong, now I long for yesterday...

Who let Saveedro out?
WHO? who? Who? who who?

(Octopus' Garden)

I'd like to be
Under the sea
In the whark's main feeding chamber on my throne
Turn the lights red
And make him mad
In the whark's main feeding chamber on my throne
We would be so happy, me and you,
And we could feed it a villager or two!
I'd like to be
under the sea
In the whark's main feeding chamber on my throne.

(Walk like an Egyptian)

All the school kids so sick of Books
They like their black and red uniform
Join the Moiety (oh whey oh)
Get cool knives and pretend to nonconform

All the girls in the village say
A oh whay oh, ay oh way oh:
Walk like a D'ni man!

The guildmasters shoot rubber bands
At Gehn, then go back to work
If they disobey (oh whey oh)
He fires 'em all, feeds 'em to the wharks

All the guards for the gallows say
A oh whay oh ay oh way oh--
Walk like a D'ni man!

All the Rivenese with their fish
They bow and scrape, call Gehn m'Lord
But the Moiety know (oh whay oh)
He's cornered the Riven Tourist Board

All the sunners on the rock say
Eeeeeehanhh! Eeeeehnnnhaah! (Bark! Schnort! Splash!)
Walk like a D'ni man...
Walk like a D'ni man...

Ode to a Squee

I think that I shall never see
A creature ugly as a Squee
A Squee that on a summer's day
Made my nerves begin to fray
With its infernal squeaking cant
And made me want to leap and rant.
No wonder Saavy's crazy. I
Believe it's time to cook Squee-pie.
