Sepdet settles herself by the fire. ~I’d have thought everyone had heard the tale of Silver Sorrows by now.~

Mouse shakes his head. ~Even though I am a member of this sept, I am not as involved as one could expect.~ He chuckles. ~I do not even have a pack. How tragic.~

Moira grunts. “My heart bleeds fer ya.”

Sepdet shrugs.~Well, it concerns Uktena as much as anyone, so, Mouse, you should hear. Eligio-yuf, he was brought to this caern by a vision of a burning Wheel, as I was by a wheel of white birds. We shared dreams together over this. And in doing, we started learning the past.~

Mouse mms and nods.

Oscar shuts up and listens.

Sepdet says, ~Silver Sorrows, it’s an old pack. From time of first the Wyrmcomers, the Conquistadors.~ She struggles over the word. ~And the destruction they wrought came into being, and its name was Darkness Falling Stealer of Souls, and it was so great that all the Uktena, all the Wendigo, all the Croatan could not destroy it. Time and again it was tried, but the corruption survived in part and grew stronger by the very powers of destruction wielded against it.~

Mouse nods. He is familliar with this.

Sepdet spreads her hands. ~Soon the great packs were scattered and many fled before it. At last a pack was formed against it, Silver Sorrows of the three tribes:

Don Santego, Uktena Seer and their alpha,

Grey Eagle, Seer of the Croatan and beta,

Grey Paws warrior of the Wendigo,

and Owl-in-Flight the Wendigo Galliard,

and last young Tailbiter, no-moon Uktena, brave little cub.~

Sepdet sighs. ~They harried the foe enough that it drew much of its force against them. And Eagle and Santego, the alpha, knew soon they too would fall in battle. So a desperate plan they made.~

Sepdet says, ~In secret– for the more who knew, the greater chance the Bane would guess their plan– they decided the only way was to trap and bind it. And to do this, they must have bait.~

Sepdet says, ~What was it hunting, and seeking most avidly that they could use as a lure?~

Sepdet says, ~Themselves.~

Sepdet says, ~So Don Santego went ahead of the pack, supposedly to scout ground and a new safe den, but truly to meet with the foe, and offer up his pack– to tell the foe it could have Silver Sorrows, and that he, alpha, would lead and betray his own packmates into the clutches of the enemy.~

Sepdet winces. ~And when Santego returned, they followed him, this pack, and did not know their peril. Only Grey Eagle knew the doom that none of them would escape, and she kept her own council.~

Mouse blinks.

Sepdet’s face turns bitter. ~She was Croatan, and sure that the needs of many outweigh a few lives, even those dearest to her. So sure. Would that I could ever have such courage, and lack any doubt.

~The tale goes, they walked, some with eyes closed, some with eyes open, into the trap, to a cliff’s edge, and Soul-Stealer came upon them in unbridled form. Their backs were to a chasm, and their faces– to their death.~

Sepdet says, ~And Santego had led them there. The worst of it was, in his dealings with the foe, his own mind had been caught. Instead of seizing the chance to bind the Bane, he stood and watched them fall and die, and was unmoved.~

Sepdet says, ~Only then did Grey Eagle– as the rest had already realized– start to fear her alpha had betrayed them all. For so far, the plan had gone as she deemed it would. As she fell, she screamed Santego’s name, calling him back to their purpose.~

Sepdet says, ~He heard, and groaned, and with all his strength of will broke free long enough to summon the power of Uktena, to sunder the cliff on which they battled. All fell plummeting into the chasm, to their deaths. Darkness Falling Soul-Stealer was bound tight in a long sleep.~

Sepdet says, ~Santego alone lived, a broken man. He had not realized, when he had planned this path, they would all die. Their deaths bore on his spirit til his last day. But he was Uktena, and faithfully guarded and watched over the place where the Bane had fallen, binding it deep with rites.~

Sepdet says, ~He passed the tending on to his children, through the centuries. But one at last, she fell fighting Wyrm before she could work her final magic, a Stone fetish she had long sought and fashioned to bind the foe for all time. Instead, slowly, the Dreamer awoke, and sent its foul mind seeking. Seeking those who could destroy it.~

Sepdet’s eyes flash. ~Those who could see the past and relive it. He followed me. He followed Toxic Four-moons the dreamwalker. He followed Therru, Tailbiter. He followed Summerfrost pack, who found the fetish Stone by which he might be bound. And finally, he followed Eligio Sacateca, for he realized that this Uktena was not only one who could see his horrible truth, but that he was now the vessel of Santego’s spirit reborn.~

Oscar toys with his moustache.

Never-Speaks yawns quiety. Well, damn.

Sepdet growls. ~So now you see why Soul-Stealer has taken Eligio. But Eligio will not be broken a second time; he’ll die first. He knows what it means to betray his friends, for he remembers the long ago. In dreams I taste his torture, and feel him being pushed towards the Spiral to walk it. Tomorrow night, we go to to bind the Soul-Stealer and free Eligio– or let him die. We will not fail our alpha. ~

Mouse hms.

Sepdet suddenly dwindles, some of the fire falling from her face. ~Well. We’ll do what we must. If Grey Eagle doesn’t take us walking down a suicide road, we may even return.~ She shrugs. ~That is the tale. I hope some of you hear the end of it.~
